Dr. Baum has served as Center Director, Division Chief, and Principal Investigator in charge of $45 million in research funds in the last two decades. In addition to her research duties, she also supervises personnel and mentors multiple graduate and post-doctoral fellows. Her responsibilities include developing and initiating new research programs, networking and collaborating with investigators at other universities and with federal officials in order to identify research priorities and obtain funding.
Specialties: Dr. Baum led the research team that pioneered the concept of the relationship between plasma nutrients, disease progression and mortality in HIV-1 infected cohorts for nearly two decades. At FIU, she is Principal Investigator of a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded clinical trial “HIV Disease, Drug Abuse, and Nutrient Therapy in Botswana,” conducted in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health and the Botswana-Harvard Partnership (BHP).
