Dr. Shekhar Bhansali, Alcatel Lucent Professor. Prof. and department chair of ECE, is now the new director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Electrical, Communications, and Cyber Systems.Dr. Shekhar Bhansali's expertise is in the field of biosensors, microfluidics, nanostructured catalysts and microsystems. He has a background in developing microfluidic tools for DNA damage detection, 3D multicellular spheroid monitoring, real-time biomarker monitoring, automated cell health monitoring, cardiovascular diagnostic sensors, and many other diagnostic devices.
He has published over 300 peer reviewed papers, has been awarded 40 patents and has directed research training programs that have supported over 200 doctoral students in all areas of STEM (e.g. IGERT, 7 cohorts of Bridge to doctorate, and A.P Sloan Program). Dr. Bhansali has served as PI/Project director on 7 training awards over the past 12 years. He has successfully directed and mentored 25+ PhDs, 45+ MS and 120+ undergraduate students to graduation, significant number of them minority students. Dr. Bhansali has been recognized for his mentoring of minority students through multiple awards including the William R. Jones Outstanding Mentor Award, and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Mentor of the Year Award. He was the recipient of the and the NSF CAREER Award, USF’s Outstanding Research Award and FIUs’ Top Scholar Award. Prof. Bhansali currently serves as director of NSF INCLUDES and NSF LSAMP Bridge to Doctorate Program, and co-director of NSF Engineering Research Center: ASSIST.
