  • Mark Fonseca became a Florida International University employee in January of 2009. He first joined FIU as a student assistant, while completing is Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. In 2011 Mr. Fonseca joined FIU as a full-time faculty member as coordinator of the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences Simulation Teaching and Research (STAR) Center. Presently, Mark served as Assistant Director of the Star Center and Assistant Teaching Professor. As Director, he is responsible for coordinating schedules and the semester calendar which specifies tours, events, classes, and staff schedules. He manages day to day tasks, delegates tasks to appropriate staff members, and recruits, hires, and interviews new staff members. He keeps track of billing, invoices, smart bills, credit cards, payables, requisitions, travel and expense reports.

    Working as the STAR Center coordinator, Mark Fonseca had the opportunity to be a part of the “National Simulation Study,” funded by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This study landmark, national, multi-site, longitudinal study explored the role and outcomes of simulation in pre-licensure clinical nursing education.

    In January of 2016, Mr. Fonseca took on the responsibility of Clinical Instructor at FIU. He has taught several courses since then, including Foundations of Nursing, Foundations of Nursing Bootcamp, Geriatric Nursing, Senior Practicum, and Diseases and Disabilities in the Physically Active. His vast knowledge of the nursing field has made him comfortable with teaching any course required of him.

    Mark Fonseca is currently a part of the IPE grant. This grant, seeks to promote collaboration and emerging technology competencies among Graduate Nursing, Graduate Health Service Administration, and Athletic Training students. He also holds a position on the FIU Advanced Surgical Transport (FAST) Team. As a member of this team, he has volunteered his medical skills to be used whenever disaster strikes.

    Mark Fonseca has worked as a home health Nurse Practitioner, Surgical Intensive Care Unit Nurse, and Emergency Department nurse for eight years. He is a board certified Adult Nurse Practitioner and is currently the treasures for the Nurse Practitioner Council of Miami-Dade, which is an organization that brings Nurse Practitioners together in both Miami and throughout the US.
