• Dr. Sande Jones is nationally renowned as a nurse researcher and advocate for HIV/AIDS care and prevention in various populations. Since joining the FIU Nursing faculty in 2000, Dr. Jones has led numerous research projects focused on HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) awareness and prevention through funding from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

    Dr. Jones’s body of research in HIV/AIDS prevention spans more than two decades. Over the past ten years she has received funding from the Office of Women’s Health, and the Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy, to develop and evaluate HIV prevention programs for minority college students.

    She’s also received funding from the National Institutes of Health to study safer-sex practices of older men using prescribed erectile dysfunction medications. For the past five years she has served as Principal Investigator for two SAMHSA grants funded for $1.8M to implement HIV prevention programs for college campuses, with a focus on Hispanic women and young men who have sex with men (MSM).

    She has received numerous awards and accolades including the 2015 Florida Nurses Association Special Recognition Award, 2014 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award, 2013 Florida Nurses Association’s Hall of Fame, and the 2004 Nursing Excellence Award for HIV Prevention from the Florida Nurses Association.

    Dr. Jones received her Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth, a double Masters from Florida International University in Nursing and Adult Education. In 2000, she received her PhD in Nursing from Barry University.

    Dr. Jones is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing whose research contributions have been published in numerous professional journals, manuscripts and book chapters.She is designated as an HIV/AIDS Nurse Expert by the American Nurses Association.

    She is also the recipient of an HIV Doctoral Fellowship Award and the inaugural HIV Prevention Award from the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.

    In 2020, Dr. Jones was appointed the "Dr. Vanessa Von Wertheim Endowed Chair in Chronic Disease Prevention and Care" for the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
