Overview
overview
- Chris Poellabauer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Technology Vienna and his Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, both in Computer Science. After spending 17 years on the faculty of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Notre Dame, he joined the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU in 2021. At Notre Dame, he led the Mobile Computing Lab, served as Associate Director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, and acted as Founding Director of the Applied Analytics and Emerging Technologies Lab. At FIU, he directs the MOSAIC (Mobile Sensing and Analytics) Lab. His primary research interest is in the area of “smart health”, where he investigates the various sensing modalities provided by modern smartphones and wearables to develop novel tools and digital biomarkers for a variety of healthcare problems. Prior and current efforts in that area include the development of concussion assessment tools based on speech analysis, use of wearables to monitor the rehabilitation progress of amputees and stroke survivors, use of mobile-based assessment tools to monitor the progression of neurological conditions, development of tools to detect depression in college students and PTSD in first responders, and development of gamified interventions for children on the autism spectrum. Other areas of interest include wireless networks, vehicular communications and safety features for vulnerable traffic participants, security of Internet-of-Things devices, and edge computing based AI solutions, just to name a few. He also has strong interest in assisting with students with startup efforts and linking university resources and expertise with economic and business needs in the region. He is also a strong advocate for the early inclusion of undergraduate students in hands-on research projects, e.g., he has supervised over 200 undergraduate and high school students in various lab projects or internships, many of whom have decided to pursue graduate school or form/join a startup business.
