  • This article discusses programmatic features that are sensitive to the special needs of adult degree students while also helping institutions combat difficulties often associated with learner-centered approaches. A new major which incorporates these features is presented. Called human studies, it is a phenomenologically-based curriculum in quality of life and intentional change. The major is individualized and problem-centered and promotes a dialectic between vocational and liberal studies, personal and professional development, generalist and specialist studies, experiential and formal learning, prior and current learning, and process and content. Human studies is shown to be a futures-oriented curriculum that can attract and serve practical adult learners. © 1983 Human Sciences Press.
