abstract

  • This chapter reviews empirical evidence of the association between anxiety disorders and suicide-related behaviors. It begins with an overview of anxiety and its disorders, then separately reviews evidence of the association between anxiety disorders and death by suicide, anxiety disorders and nonfatal suicide-attempt, and anxiety and suicidal ideation. The majority of investigations have found support for an association between anxiety disorders and different types of suicide-related behaviors, although some contradictory findings exist. The field is currently limited by a dearth of studies that have examined the associations between anxiety disorders and suicide-related behaviors using prospective designs, as well as the paucity of theory-driven research on potential mediators of the associations between anxiety and suicide-related behaviors. In the concluding section, clinical implications of the empirical findings and directions for future research are discussed.
