abstract

  • Antenatal monitoring for genetic disorders is an integral component of perinatology. Obstetrician-gynaecologists are aware of the common indications for antenatal genetic monitoring, and hope that increasing numbers of disorders will be detectable in the future. In this chapter the author reviews the current status of antenatal diagnosis, suggests future directions, and considers the effect of antenatal diagnosis and selective abortion upon the incidence of both Mendelian disorders and the mutant alleles that cause such disorders.
