The field of wind engineering has many exciting potential areas for research. They cover a wide range of subjects where researchers can experience the satisfaction of pursuit of knowledge for its own sake: meteorology, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, material behavior, statistics, structural reliability, wind tunnel technology, CFD, human comfort, wind energy, natural ventilation, sustainability to name a few. It is also important for the long term health of an engineering field that research be related to the practical engineering and environmental needs of society. As a consultant one gains a perspective on these needs. This paper reviews a number of questions in wind engineering that the author has encountered where further research would bring benefits to the design industry in terms of improved codes and standards, better structures and a more sustainable environment.
